Abstract:
The purpose of this presentation is to share how a faculty learning community (FLC) designed to facilitate online course development was structured and conducted. A FLC model was selected to encourage collaborative development of courses within the nursing program. The model allowed for a collaborative approach to course development, constancy across courses and a more unified online program. Monthly meetings included progress updates, discussions about online pedagogy, presentations from experienced online instructors, instructional technology training, collaborative development of rubrics and more. Members of the learning community were asked to complete a survey about their experiences in the learning community. The results showed that all members agreed or strongly agreed that the learning community met its intended goals. Members were also very positive about the effectiveness of the meetings in helping to educate them about the process of developing and teaching an online course. The majority of respondents (80%) indicated that they will be successful in teaching their online course.
